Fun alternative ideas for National Day outfits

by Ashe Liao • 01 Aug 2023

Another year has come and gone, and now we’re celebrating National Day again! As patriotic songs play in the background, we’re figuring out where to watch the fireworks and scoping out the best National Day dining deals. We’re also going through our wardrobe to figure out what to wear. Red and white are the standard colours we turn to. But if you’re like us and want to add some spice, check out some of our fresh ideas for National Day outfits.

Steeped in culture and history, you can’t deny the beauty of batik clothing. This hand-dyeing technique originated in Indonesia and uses wax to make out intricate patterns. The batik motifs carry significant symbolism and are used as a means of communication for Javanese people. Historically, before World War 2, batik was internationally traded. A lot of batik came through Singapore during its days as a trading port, and would get exported to the rest of the world after. Nowadays, you can find batik patterns printed on modern silhouettes for a timeless look (one that’s perfect for National Day).

If you’re looking to rock something that’s both stylish and comfortable, turn to the collections at Think Batik. They’re perfect for both celebrations and casual wear. For unique hand-drawn patterns, check out Anmako. The batik is fused with Japanese flair and motifs are inspired by Singapore’s blend of international cultures. Or head to Kampong Glam and visit Baju by Oniatta where the batik is handstamped and full of authenticity.

Nothing says Singapore pride more than showing support to fabulous local brands. If you look in the right places, you’ll find talented founders and designers creating apparel in playful styles. The shirts and dresses at Elizabeth Little are handcrafted and ethically made with sustainable materials. Rest assured, the pieces will last for a long time. Still on the lookout for iconic red and white colour schemes? You’ll find something for the whole fam at local labels like Ans.ein that create wearable art.

Say what you want about Singlish, but we think it’s a hallmark of Singapore culture. It’s a melting pot of languages that come together to create a form of communication unique to us. Where else will you find people conversing using Chinese dialects and Malay words in the mix? That’s why we’re drawn to playful graphic tees with typical Singlish phrases that make us chuckle. We love the ones at Wet Tee Shirt that are super quirky. Or hit up Spectrum Store where you can even get baby onesies with funny phrases.

For anyone who wants to make sure they don’t leave the house looking like the Singapore flag, how about taking an understated approach? We’re taking a browse of local jewellery brands in Singapore that carry sparkling necklaces and earrings. Make a statement with accessories that centre around the stars and the moon to shout out our iconic Singapore flag. The cosmic crescent and star studs from By Invite Only are lovely. Or pick bracelets intentionally designed with iconic neighbourhoods in mind from Strait Lights.

Let’s be real, food is our love language in Singapore. From the best restaurants to hawker centres with a variety of cuisines, there’s always something to choose from. Even in the wee hours of the morning! Dishes like laksa, nasi lemak, and chilli crab have become synonymous with our sunny island. And now you can get your favourite dish printed on a tee to show off just how much you love them. The shirts from Independent Market are colourful and full of charm. You can also get them from Naiise and pick up some fun knick knacks at the same time.

The fashionista in us says no. We know that this is an unconventional accessory choice given our climate, but come on. When the scarves come in such gorgeous and intricate designs, how can we resist? If you’re lucky to find silk scarves with locally-inspired motifs, it can be a fashion statement without overheating your neck.

We personally love the selection from Onlewo which comes in many different colours and distinctive designs. Or opt for YeoMama Batik’s pieces with charming patterns. Scarves are incredibly versatile so you can wear them as a necktie – or for the Muslim ladies, fashion yours into a stylish hijab. Or weave it onto your handbag for a pop of colour. Perfect for spicing up your National Day outfit.
